Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum, is a compound produced by combining quartz sand, petroleum coke, and wood chips in a high-temperature resistance furnace. This material is also found naturally in the rare mineral moissanite. Commonly referred to as silicon dioxide (SiO2), it is one of the hardest known materials.
