pile 是大量许多成堆的意思，用piles of这个固定短语来形容很多的人，同样还有piles and piles of。。across在那里就是介词，遍及的意思，跟后面的the country连起来就是遍及国家全国的修饰前面的people，全国的人。。。terribly是副词，crowded是形容词，terribly 形容crowded就是非常拥挤的意思。
