一、set off
1,发生:引起;导致发生:
set off a chemical reaction.发生化学反应
2,爆炸:引起爆炸:
set off a bomb.炸弹爆炸

其实如果你看词典不明白的话,应该查一下英文解释,比如英版的牛津,美版的韦氏,我给你韦氏的解释。

set off:
intransitive senses : to start out on a course or a journey *set off for home*

set out:
intransitive senses : to start out on a course, a journey, or a career

我们可以看出,其实二者并没有什么差异,特别是在开始做什么事或者是开始旅行的意思时,很多人说副词什么的都是不正确的,从美国人的解释来看他们并不认为二者之间有何差异。

He set out to paint the whole house but finished only the front part.

set off 出发,动身
They set off in search of the lost child.
他们出发寻找失踪的孩子。
