When the white men came to North American, they found the Indians. They believed that these people were more like animals than people. They called then “savages”.
Later some people found that the Indians had a very good culture. They were a very spiritual people, and they had their own oral traditions.
The Indians believe that the world of the spirits was all around them. When people died, they believe that their spirits lived on, often as a familiar animals or fish. If a person they lived died, and they saw a whale close to the shore, they believed that the dead person was that whale, and that it had come back to say good --bye.
All of these beliefs were told, and became part of a very rich folk culture.
Each family had its own stories, and each story had its hero. The Indian people wanted to keep their stories alive, so they made large totem poles that told the story of their family. There totem poles stood outside their house, so that everyone could see that story of the family.
The Indians had many folk tales. They liked to have parties, and when they had a party, they would tell their stories. Sometimes their story was told by dancing. Most of the stories had animals, using wood, hair, and sea shells. They believed that when they put on the masks and danced, they became that creature.
Some of the missionaries that came tried to stop the Indians from making totem poles. Other missionaries tried to work with the Indians’ culture, while they taught them European religion. There was a Jesuit missionary called Father Brebuf, who worked in what is now Northern Ontario. In 1643 he made a beautiful Christmas carol for the Indians. The Indians didn’t know about God, but they had their Gitchee Manitou, who was very similar. The Indians didn’t know about barns, so he had the baby born in a lodge. The Christ child was wrapped in rabbits’ fur. The wise men became Indian braves. The Indians didn’t know about the kinds of gifts the wise men brought, so Father Brebuf had them bring beaver skins. In this way, the Indians were able to sing about Christmas in a way they could understand.
To this day, this beautiful Christmas carol is sung in Canada at Christmas time. Hundreds of years later, this carol is now part of the Canadian folk culture.
