Changes in paid and unpaid work responsi-bilities as individuals age, form relationships, have children, and eventually see their chil-dren exit the household and become indepen-dent make up life course stages that mark different configurations of time use and responsibilities (Anxo et al. 2011; Glick 1947). We use a stylized typology of stages that describe single young adults entering the labor force, partnered young adults, partnered new parents, partnered parents of older chil-dren, and single parents, as well as older partnered and older single people. Expectations accompanying life course stages are gendered (Moen 1996) and could generate differences in men’s and women’s time for sleep. For example, having a spouse or part-ner instead of being single could make it easier to accomplish a household’s needs, leaving more time for other activities such as sleep.
