Chinese Language Facts:
The challenging part about the Chinese language is being able to comprehend the different spoken dialects.
Chinese writing should be easier to learn since there is only one common written format - Chinese characters, which are used to transfer messages between different dialect speakers.

The sound system of the official Mandarin language is relatively simple to master compared with other languages since there are approximately only 400 basic syllables.

Chinese is a tonal language, most Chinese syllables are pronounced with one of four tones. The same basic syllable pronounced with different tones can have completely different meanings.

Chinese language is the language of the Han people (Hanyu), it is the oldest written language in the world with at least 6,000 years of history.
Chinese belongs to the standard Sino-Tibetan languages family, it includes variants from seven main dialect groups. The northern or Mandarin dialect covers three fourth of China's territory and includes two thirds of its population. Standard Chinese is also known by its official designation, Putonghua, literally means "common speech", it is the most widely spoken of all.

The major Chinese language group is Chinese people in the People's Republic of China, which has a population of over 1.3 billion. Approximately 95 percent of the Chinese population speak Chinese, the rest speak non-Chinese languages such as Tibetan, Mongolian, Lolo, Miao, and Tai, etc.

Chinese is also used by substantial numbers of population in other southeast Asia countries, especially in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Chinese-speaking communities are also growing around the world in North and South America, Europe and Africa. It is one of the languages the United Nations uses when conducting official businesses.

Chinese language is an independent branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It includes several major subfamilies: Tibetan, spoken in Tibet; Lolo-Burmese, in Burma, and in discontinuous parts of southern China, etc.; and Karen, in lower Burma.

Besides a core vocabulary and sounds, Chinese general concepts and most related languages share features that distinguish them from most Western languages: they are monosyllabic, have little inflection, and are tonal.

Chinese general concepts in syntax is rather simple and uncomplicated but unusual from the standpoint of English.

In order to indicate differences in meaning between words that are similar in sound, Chinese uses tones, each stressed syllable has a significant contrastive pitch which is an integral part of the syllable. All Chinese languages/dialects have tones, but Mandarin has one of the simplest tone system and consist only four basic tones.
