鹅銮鼻附近的外海有七星岩暗礁，过去常有不熟悉附近水域的船只触礁沈没。1867年（清同治六年），一艘美国商船从汕头开往牛庄途中，在暴风中迷失方向，漂至七星岩附近触礁沈没，船长夫妇和船员游泳登岸后，除一中国船员逃至打狗外，其他人均被龟仔角社（社顶）的原住民俘虏杀害，被称为罗发号事件。琉球渔民也在南岬一带遇难，还因此引发牡丹社事件，美国和日本政府因此要求清朝在此处设灯塔。
