Before my speech, I’d like to ask all the girls here a question:Have you ever had the experience to hide in quilt reading novels in your cell phone? I think most of your answers will be “Yes”. Well, actually, that was my daily routine during my high school time and I really have a lot of fun from it. However, this pleasure stopped this April out of a battle which broke out between Baidu wenku and the writers of China. And I will unfold the whole event from the following three main points: the background, the process and the result.”
First, I’d like to say something about Baidu Wenku. Baidu Wenku is such an open platform where the netizens can share what they have collected. Just log in the website of baidu then you can read all kinds of documents online or take some baidu credits to download them. I guess most of you already know that the credit is gained from uploading your collections. It’s quite simple and convenient to use, right? Particularly, all is free! But it’s not the case to the writers. Please imagine, if you are a writer, probably you not only put your heart into writing but also make a living by that. What does it mean to you if more and more readers incline to use baidu wenku and refuse to pay for your fruit of effort?
Thus, some writers in China began to take action for their intellectual property. On March 15th, fifty writers in China like Jia Pingwa and Han Han got together and even put out “the statement of condemnation to baidu” in public. And this was the start of the battle. They accused baidu of “stealing our works, stealing our rights, stealing our property and making baidu a spoils market!” In fact, back to early times, Shengda , an online website, also claimed that “If baidu wenku do not die, Chinese original literature work will come to end.” So, how did baidu tackle this? Facing so much blames, baidu only passed the buck to netizens. It claimed that baidu wenku was just a platform for people not baidu itself to share documents. Even if the intellectual property of writers wass hurt, it was not baidu’s responsibility.
But the writers still didn’t buy it. On March 24th, the union of writers organized a negotiation with Baidu which aimed at reaching an agreement and meanwhile breaking the deadlock. The writers require Baidu to delete their essays but Baidu refused to do so. Both sides didn’t reach any agreement and the negotiation broke up at last.
However, the event didn’t end. It was still boiling and gradually became a heated discussion of the nation. More and more people started boosting writers. Under the pressure of whole society, Baidu had no choice but to give in and then deleted most of its essays in Wenku.
It seems that the writers won the victory at last. But if thinking twice, we will find that it is not the perfect solution to this problem.
