a number of 与the number of用法 区别 比较

1．the number of表示“……的数量”，跟复数名词连用作主语时，中心词是number，谓语动词要用单数。例如：

【辨析】

1. a number of 只能用作定语，修饰可数名词的复数，
意为“许多的，若干的”。number 前可用large, small, good, certain, great等修饰词。
当它修饰主语时，谓语动词用复数。如：
We have lived here for a number of years. 我们在这里已经住了好些年了。
There are a great number of graduate students in this university.
这所大学有许多研究生。

2. the number of意为“……的数量，数目”。
当它与后面的名词连用时，中心词是the number。
如果用作主语，即使后面的名词是复数，谓语也要用单数。
