coffee and life
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned to complaints about tress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.
When all the students had a cup coffee in his hand, the professor said:” If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups.
Now if life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”

一群老同学，事业有成，一同前往探望大学老教授。谈话内容逐渐变成对工作和生活压力的报怨。老教授以咖啡待客，从厨房端出一大壶咖啡和各种各样的咖啡杯—陶瓷的，塑料的，玻璃的，水晶的，有的外观平平，有的价格昂贵，有的则精致高雅—然后让学生们随意喝点热咖啡。
每个学生手里都端上一杯咖啡后，老教授说道：“不知诸位注意到没有，所有外观好看，价格昂贵都被取走了，剩下都是普通廉价的。对各位来说追求最好的东西无可厚非，但这也是你们各种问题和压力的根源。你们真正要的是咖啡，不是咖啡杯，但大家都有意识地取了最好的，还彼此审视各自的杯子。
如果生活是咖啡，那么工作，金钱和社会职地位就是咖啡杯。这些只是承载生活的工具而已，但生活本身质量并没有因此而有所改变。有时候，一旦我们只关注杯子，就不会真正享受到杯中的咖啡。”
