希望工程简介
希望工程是一项社会公益事业，它创建于1989年10月。
希望工程的宗旨是：根据政府关于多渠道筹集教育经费的方针，以民间的方式广泛动员海内外财力资源，建立希望工程基金，资助贫困地区的失学儿童继续学业、改善贫困地区的办学条件，促进贫困地区基础教育事业的发展。
实施希望工程，是中国农村贫困地区广大失学少年的迫切要求。随着经济建设事业的发展，国家对教育的投入不断增加，全国教育事业也取得了显著成就。但从总体看发展不够平衡，贫困地区的基础教育投入相对不足，办学条件差，一大批中小学的危房因资金不足而得不到及时修缮；全国目前仍有相当数量的一批儿童因家庭贫困而徘徊于校门之外。渴望读书已成为千百万失学儿童的最大心愿。
纵观世界各国教育经费的计算，均包括政府预算支出和民间投资两个方面。实践表明，任何国家的教育经费都不可能是由政府全包。特别是象中国这样的发展中大国，要办好教育更应借鉴国外经验，动员社会力量办教育。希望工程正是在这方面走出了一条成功之路。
