区别一：意思不同
1、a number of表示大量的，许多的，充足的的意思。
2、the number of表示...的数量，...的数量的意思。
区别二：谓语不同
1、a number of 意思是“一些，若干”(= some)，后面的谓语动词用复数形式。
2、the number of作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
区别三：用法不同
