Love is a Fallacy – A Recap

A university student of law studies wanted to find a smart, graceful and beautiful girl as his partner. He traded his roommate with a raccoon coat in exchange of dating his roommate’s girlfriend. The student found that the girl was graceful and beautiful, but she was not smart enough, so he decided to train her with logical thinking before beginning formal dating.

In the first five days, the student taught her with some common fallacies of logic.
- Dicto Simpliciter: “Doing sports is good so everyone should do sports”. This proposition was not conclusive when the subjects are people with heart conditions.
- Hasty Generalisation: “You cannot speak French; neither is your friend; therefore there is no one in the university who can”. It had too little evidence to support the statement.
- Post Hoc: “Do not bring him to picnic, because if you do it will rain”. The cause of action was not correct.
- Contradictory Premises: “The omnipotent God can create a rock that God cannot lift”. It was not arguable when the premises are conflicting against each other.
- Ad Misericordiam: “The candidate responded to the question asking about his ability to work with nothing but listing his miseries”. Unmatched responses were not constructive.
- False Analogy: “Because surgeons refer to X-ray during operation, so students should refer to books during exams”. The comparison was falsely interpreted.
- Hypothesis Contrary to Fact: “Without Madam Curie, no one will discover radium”. The assumed fact cannot initiate a strong argument.
- Poisoning the Well: People cannot start a rational argument by calling the opponent a liar.

After the training of common logic, the student tried to court to the girl, but the girl seemed logically enlightened, and logically rejected the student by proving his words were fallacies.
- the student said they were meant to be together, the girl believed it was Hasty Generalisation, because they only dated for 5 days.
- the student argued that 5 days were sufficient, because people do not need to finish a cake before knowing the cake was delicious. The girl believed it was False Analogy, as she was not a cake but a girl.
- the student said he loved the girl; without her his life would have no meaning. The girl responded by identifying it as an Ad Misericordiam, as he was appealing by demonstrating misery.
- the student then said, the girl would not identify his words to be fallacies without his training. The girl said it was Hypothesis Contrary to Fact, because it was an assumed fact.
- the student said it was only a training of logic, and it was not life. The girl said it was a Dicto Simpliciter.
- when the student learnt that the girl had agreed to date his roommate, he called his roommate a liar; the girl immediate pointed out it was Poisoning the Well.

At last, the student asked for a logical reason of the girl’s choice, and the girl said it was because the roommate owned a raccoon coat, which the student himself gave it to the roommate.
