起初王守仁（即王阳明）没有儿子，养育弟弟的儿子王正宪为后代。到了晚年，生了儿子王正亿，王正亿二岁而丧父（王守仁去世）。王正亿长大以后，袭官职任锦衣副千户。明穆宗隆庆初年，袭爵为新建伯。明神宗万历五年死去。王正亿的儿子王承勋继承官爵，监管粮食水路运输二十年。王承勋的儿子（长子）王先进没有儿子，王先进要以弟弟王先达的儿子王业弘继承血脉。王先达的妻子（对王先进）说：“大伯（称丈夫的大哥）没有儿子，爵位自然（由公公王承勋）传给我的丈夫（王先达）。由父亲传给儿子，爵位会到什么地方去呢？”王先进愤怒，于是养育同一家族人之子王业洵为后代。等到王承勋死去时，王先进未袭爵就死了。王业洵自认为不是嫡嗣，终当要把爵位归还给王先达，并且料到他会争夺，就诽谤王先达是收养的，而另外推举王承勋弟弟的儿子王先通继承，屡次在朝廷上争论，几十年不能裁决。崇祯年间，王先达的儿子王业弘又与王先通上奏疏争辩。而王业洵兄长王业浩当时任总督，主管官员怕触犯王业浩，最终以王先通继承爵位。王业弘气愤，手持奏疏进入宫禁门内控诉。自刎不死，被逮捕下狱，不久被释放。王先通袭封新建伯后四年，流寇攻陷京城，王先通被杀。
