为何a lot of students 后面接are而不是is

a lot of 是看后面跟的名词是否为可数名词还是不可数名词的
如果是可数名词，那么就要用复数，和many是一样的
如果是不可数名词，那就要用单数，和much是一样的

而 lot 的单复数，用冠词a 或者lots 来表示

"They have lots of (much) money in the bank."
"A lot of (many) Americans travel to Europe."
"We got lots of (many) mosquitoes last summer."
"We got lots of (much) rain last summer."

a lot 在这里相当于量词，是一大堆的意思。。其作用和 a cup, a set等等一样。
比如：a cup of tea 是一杯茶。a set of tools 是一套工具。
茶是不可数名词，当做第三人称单数对待，因此可以说 A cup of tea is a good idea. 一大堆人/一群人是指很多人，所以系动词要搭配are: A lot of people are in the house.

因此，决定系动词用 is 还是 are的，并不是看量词前面的数词，而是看后面被量词修饰的名词是单数还是复数。
