Chinese art songs have their own ethnic distinction, having absorbed vocabulary from a rich array of poetry and folk songs. The special nature of the Chinese language is paramount, as uniquely Chinese rhyming patterns, rhythms, and cadence are combined with varying lengths of syllables and converted into words expressing modern ethnic sentiment. The result is art songs that contain the ethnic cadence and artistic beauty forming the essence of both poetry and song.
