PeterlatermeetsalittlegirlnamedMaimieManneringwhoislostintheGardens.HeandMaimiebecomefastfriends,andlittlePeteraskshertomarryhim.Maimieisgoingtostaywithhim,butrealizesthathermothermustbemissingherdreadfully,sosheleavesPetertoreturnhome.MaimiedoesnotforgetPeter,however,andwhensheisoldershemakespresentsandlettersforhim.Sheevengiveshimanimaginarygoatwhichheridesaroundeverynight.MaimieistheliterarypredecessortothecharacterWendyDarlinginBarrie'slaterPeterandWendystory. Throughoutthenovel,Petermisunderstandssimplethingslikechildren'sgames.Hedoesnotknowwhatapramis,mistakingitforananimal,andhebecomesextremelyattachedtoaboy'slostkite.ItisonlywhenMaimietellshim,thathediscoversheplaysallhisgamesincorrectly.WhenPeterisnotplaying,helikestomakegravesforthechildrenwhogetlostatnight,buryingthemwithlittleheadstonesintheGardens.
