【Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape a predator(捕食动物)such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches.】Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully shark- and crocodile-free. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey(猎物)as well as predator—and often had to make a speedy exit as a result.

谓语:do so
原因状语从句:because they have...a large shark
(其中because是从属连词,they是从句的主语,谓语是have surfaced,目的状语是to escape a predator such as ... shark)

主语:One of the features of Jurassic oceans
表语:an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles
非限制性定语从句:both of which were fond of ...lunches (补充说明 sharks and crocodiles)

依据上文,often do so 是指 evolve an anti-decompression means,即:通过进化长出能抗减压的器官。

Whales( that suffer the bends定语从句) often do so (状语从句because they have surfaced to escape a predator(捕食动物)such as a large shark). One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, (both of which were fond of ichthyosaur 状语从句)lunches.】

第一句主语Whales, 主从that suffer the bends, 谓语do so, because后就是状语从句,表原因(曾经浮上水面躲避诸如大型鲨鱼等猎食者)
第二句更简单,both of which就是指large sharks and crodcodiles.
